Getting Those 10,000 Steps Each Day

Getting Those 10,000 Steps Each Day

10,000 steps is the new mantra.

And for good reason. The simple act of walking provides so many health benefits for us. More walking reaps more benefits.

Improve your heart health by getting in your steps. Walking can lower your blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar. And all of that lowers your risk of heart problems.

Walking can improve your muscle mass and strength.

Walking will improve energy, concentration, and muscle power and reduce body fat. It can also reduce your risk of osteoporosis, diabetes, and some forms of cancer.

The very idea of walking 10,000 steps can feel very daunting. Who has time throughout their day to do that much walking? That thought is enough to have many shaking their head. But it is doable.

Tips that will help you get your 10,000 steps in each day.

First, you should get an app that tracks your steps or purchase a fitness tracker. Seeing your progress can be very motivating. Knowing you are behind on steps can push you to walk more. I have actually gotten up and walked through every room in the house to get some added steps. Or take a few quick walks outside—anything to get those steps.

Make it a habit to only sit for a short period. Get up and move. Set a timer to remind you to get up and walk around. If you watch television, get up during the commercials and move.

When running errands, park at the far end of the parking lot. Many of us try to find that close-up parking space, but your body would appreciate you walking the extra steps.

Put on some music and dance around the house. You can always pull the blinds so no one can watch your crazy dance moves. Just enjoy yourself and have some fun.

There are many YouTube fitness videos that you can follow that provide added steps.

When your phone rings, get up and move. Most of us can easily walk and talk at the same time.

Forget the elevator and take the steps.

Take your dog for a few extra walks. You will both benefit.

Believe it or not, cleaning your house can add quite a few extra steps to your count. Keep your home clean, and add some steps to your tally.

Form a walking group with your

like-minded friends and co-workers.

Instead of sitting the whole time you watch television, get up occasionally and walk in place.

Now and then, you could remove the clothes from your treadmill and use it for walking.

Find a YouTube walking video and get moving. You will never have to miss a day of walking due to bad weather.

Never leave the house without your walking shoes.

I would love to hear other's tips about getting in your steps daily.
