Reinventing Yourself As You Get Older

Reinvent Yourself

"Life is what we make it, always has been, always will be." — Grandma Moses

We have all looked back and wished we had done some things differently at some point in our lives. And there are things we wished we hadn't done and, of course, things we should have done. That's part of life.

"Change your life today. Don't gamble on the on the future, act now without delay."

I am a firm believer in the idea that you are never too old to do the things you want to do. So that, of course, includes a whole new reinvention if that is what you desire. Or maybe just a minor remodel. Yes, it's possible to reinvent yourself at any age.

Of course, you need to know what aspects of your life you want or need to change. What parts of your life need reinventing? Maybe you are feeling bored? Do you feel like your life has no direction? Are you stuck in the same daily rut and need some direction? Need a little more excitement in your life?

"You can get what you want or you can just get old."

Billy Joel

Start your reinvention with some minor changes. Set some goals for yourself. Do you have a vision of what you would like your life to look like?

Some things to consider-

Perhaps after retiring, you lost your focus. You get up in the morning, have your coffee and breakfast, and wonder what you're going to do for the rest of the day. I think one of the hardest things about getting older is wondering what to do with your time.

What about getting a job? A part-time job. You don't have to go all-in with the whole 9-5 thing. You don't have to get into the entire rat race again. A part-time job will provide you a sense of accomplishment. Try something entirely new, and unlike the position you held in your previous career. A little challenge is good for us. Reinventing means change.

I will bet that before you retired, you were always talking about what you were going to do when you quit the daily grind. Maybe you had been thinking about turning a hobby into a small business. You were going to travel. Perhaps you had thought of writing a book or starting a blog. Well, now is as good a time as any.

I use to think it would be awesome to volunteer at an animal shelter. But with raising a family and working, there was never time. Maybe at this point in my life, I can give it some thought. Volunteering and helping out in the community is an excellent start to reinventing yourself and helping others while simultaneously helping yourself.

"Life isn't about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself." -George Bernard Shaw

Maybe now is the time to rid yourself of the old habits and the people who don't uplift and support you, create good habits, and spend more time with the right people—consider it a decluttering of your life.

Another way to reinvent ourselves is to do the best we possibly can for our health. Regular check-ups, diet, and fitness can do wonders for us. Reinventing yourself works much better if you make your health a priority.

And then, of course, there are the physical changes to our bodies. It's hard to accept the changes our bodies have gone through. We may have a few extra pounds and a few lines on our faces. But we are still the same person. Maybe an older version, but still us. Reinvent your look with a new hairstyle and apply a bit of makeup. Choose more flattering clothing.

So keep a positive attitude. Keep busy. Be happy.

I have shared some of my thoughts on reinventing our lives. I would love to hear your ideas.
